Television Show Blog

There are numerous sitcoms these days that everyone seems to love or hate. I personally do not watch too many television shows because I do not have that much time to keep up with them and I’d rather spend my time doing other things.
The only television show that I have kept up with watching over the last couple of years is The OC. In the last year and a half it went downhill simply because they ran out of good stories. When Marissa left the show last year it got slightly a bit better because she wasn’t the greatest actress. However, Fox has considered it to be a bad show and is cancelling it this week. I definitely do plan on watching the final episode primarily because I have been watching it for so long, I need to know how they end it.
Other than The OC, the only other television that I watch are shows that you can watch at random times without having to know what is going in the plot or repeats of older television shows. These shows primarily include Friends, King of Queens, American Idol, and The Young and the Restless. Y and R is a soap opera that I have been growing up watching for years. It is a great soap opera that I really only have to watch once every 2 weeks and I’ll still know what’s going on in the plot because soaps do not like to move very fast. Along with the above shows listed I enjoy watching the news, specifically CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Chanel). I love being informed about what is going on around me and the rest of the world.

Blog #4-Radio Stations

I listened to 91.5 the Beat for an hour today. It is a new hit music Canadian station for Kitchener, Ontario and the Tri-Cities area. It primarily plays the hottest new rhythmic/contemporary radio hits. It plays approximately 70% American radio hits. According to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission all Canadian radio stations must play 30% of its music produced by Canadian artists or the lyrics must be written entirely by a Canadian. Why do Canadians do this? Through a protectionism approach we fear that without a regulatory system, independent Canadian popular culture would be swallowed up by that of the neighboring United States.

The above radio stations target audience is primarily young people who enjoy listening to hip hop and pop music. I primarily listen to that radio station because I enjoy listening to rhythmic/contemporary music while I am driving. It is also nice to be able to listen to new and upcoming Canadian singers who are trying to make it big in the mainstream culture. These Canadian artists eventually do make it big all around North American (ex. Nelly Furtado, Baranaked Ladies, Bryan Adams, etc. ).

The music played is pretty much the exact same music you would hear on a Detroit hit radio station, however, with an added bonus of hearing more Canadian artists. The ads on 9.15 the Beat is also very similar to Detroit radio stations. Moving closer to the weekend I often hear ads about happening club events and concerts. One huge difference I have found between the different countries are the DJ’s commentary. The DJ’s on some radio stations in Detroit are much more open in mentioning vulgar things in comparison to Canada.

Extended Blog #2-"What goes around"

Song Analysis

Justin Timberlake one of hottest pop sensations today burst out with one of the hottest albums of the year in 2006. The hottest hit from his album presently is “What goes around.” Living in a ‘run and go’ society his lyrics have become a quick fix for many people who have experienced heartache. He achieves this through an intentional plot of an unfaithful lover, the varying mood of the song, and the genre of the song.

There appears to be an intentional theme and plot in “What goes around.” Justin Timberlake is conveying his feelings and emotions of how he dated a girl who he loved but, she was an unfaithful lover and broke up with him. We know that she is an unfaithful lover when he sings the part “You cheated girl. My heart bleeds” (Justin Timberlake). Listening to this song we are given the opportunity to comprehend ourselves of how the women could’ve cheated and made him upset. The young women had what was coming to her because the man she had left for Justin Timberlake cheated on her. This is noted in the song when he sings “You spend your nights alone. And he never comes home. And every time you call him. All you get’s a busy tone. I heard you found out. That he’s doing to you. What you did to me. Ain’t that the way it goes” (Justin Timberlake). The plot highlights what may go on in someone’s mind when they are cheated on and how the person cheated on has reassurance that their ex will get what they deserve.

The mood and tune of a song greatly shapes how people perceive a song. The beginning of the song appears to be in a minor tune. The music is very soft with light guitar and drums playing in the background. There is sadness in the mood as Justin Timberlake vent’s his emotion of how upset he is that his girlfriend cheated on him. The second half of the song changes into a major tune which appears as the climax and strongest portion of the song. The music switches into heavier guitar and drums. There is somewhat a sense of happiness because he is glad she got her heart broken as well and he does not want to take her back. This is apparent when he sings “You wish you had somebody. That could come and make it right. But girl I ain’t somebody with a lot of sympathy” (Justin Timberlake).

This song appears to be classified under the pop genre and can be appealing to a many listeners. The song is classified in the pop genre primarily because the artist is a pop sensation. It’s a song that many people can relate to who have been through similar experiences of the unforgiving indictments of an unfaithful lover. The lyrics are very effective if the listener pays attention to them carefully either in the car, an office, or at home. The effectiveness of the song comes from the fact that it allows people who are going through heartache the reassurance that everything will be okay in the long run.

Justin Timberlake’s lyrics have become very motivational for people who are going through relationship problems. “What goes around” allows the listener to place themselves in the song and feel the emotions associated with heartache. In the busy world society lives in today it sometimes is difficult for people to talk to others about their emotions. Hence, with songs “What goes around” it becomes easier and quicker for people to vent their emotions through the lyrics.

Lyrics to Justin Timberlake (The lyrics got all messed up when I tried to copy and paste them.)

What Goes Around Hey girl, is he everything you wanted in a man You know I gave you the world You had me in the palm of your hand So why your love went away I just can't seem to understand Thought it was me and you babe Me and you until the end But I guess I was wrong Don't want to think about it Don't want to talk about it I'm just so sick about it Can't believe it's ending this way Just so confused about it Feeling the blues about it I just can't do without ya Tell me is this fair? Is this the way it's really going down? Is this how we say goodbye? Should've known better when you came around That you were gonna make me cry It's breaking my heart to watch you run around 'Cause I know that you're living a lie That's okay baby 'cause in time you will find... What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around Now girl, I remember everything that you claimed You said that you were moving on now And maybe I should do the same Funny thing about that is I was ready to give you my name Thought it was me and you, babe And now, it's all just a shame And I guess I was wrong Don't want to think about it Don't want to talk about it I'm just so sick about it Can't believe it's ending this way Just so confused about it Feeling the blues about it I just can't do without ya Can you tell me is this fair? Is this the way things are going down? Is this how we say goodbye? Should've known better when you came around (should've known better that you were gonna make me cry) That you were going to make me cry Now it's breaking my heart to watch you run around 'Cause I know that you're living a lie That's okay baby 'cause in time you will find What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around What goes around comes around Yeah What goes around comes around. You should know that What goes around comes around Yeah What goes around comes around You should know that Don't want to think about it (no) Don't want to talk about it I'm just so sick about it Can't believe it's ending this way Just so confused about it Feeling the blues about it (yeah) I just can't do without ya Tell me is this fair? Is this the way things are going down? Is this how we say goodbye? Should've known better when you came around (should've known better that you were gonna make me cry) That you were going to make me cry Now it's breaking my heart to watch you run around 'Cause I know that you're living a lie But that's okay baby 'cause in time you will find What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around What goes around, goes around, goes around Comes all the way back around [Comes Around interlude:] Let me paint this picture for you, baby You spend your nights alone And he never comes home And every time you call him All you get's a busy tone I heard you found out That he's doing to you What you did to me Ain't that the way it goes You cheated girl My heart bleeds girl So it goes without saying that you left me feeling hurt Just a classic case A scenario Tale as old as time Girl you got what you deserved And now you want somebody To cure the lonely nights You wish you had somebody That could come and make it right But girl I ain't somebody with a lot of sympathy You'll see (What goes around comes back around) I thought I told ya, hey (What goes around comes back around) I thought I told ya, hey (What goes around comes back around) I thought I told ya, hey (What goes around comes back around) I thought I told ya, hey See? You should've listened to me, baby Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah Because (What goes around comes back around)
